About Canto
Canto is a publishing house for the audio renaissance of canonical literature. Every work in the catalogue is staged as spatial audio drama: voices positioned around the listener, scored, with designed silence between cantos. Headphones intended.
A canto is a principal division of a long poem, complete in itself and leading toward the next. Dante's Inferno has thirty-four; Byron's Don Juan, seventeen. The form is older than print and was always meant to be heard. We take it as our unit: each canto runs roughly two minutes, and every series arrives whole at release, built for the intervals of a day.
Canto began as one founder's private workaround. He has aphantasia — no mind's eye — and he loves literature the way you can love a country you are never allowed to enter. He could follow a story, admire the writing of it, and still never stand inside it: the moor never darkened, the castle never rang. Staged sound was his solve. When the scene is built around you — a voice at your shoulder, hooves on the road behind — nothing is left to be imagined. The story is simply there.
The texts we stage are drawn from the public domain, the recordings are our own, and the transcripts are published openly. We are a small company making a long bet: that the greatest stories ever told still want to be heard, and that the headphones already in your pocket are the theatre they've been waiting for.
